Lightning; Matt & Kim

Ready? Alright, “Let’s Go Lets Go Lets Go” and the party of Matt & Kim’s fourth album has officially started. Matt & Kim’s concerts are one for the ages, but lets be honest, who needs to go to a building surrounded by 100′s people to listen to music. The album is that good, its full of emotion where you can hold your own concert. I’ll be honest I have no shame left, I absolutely have started randomly jumping up and down and going crazy once I start listening to Lightning.

By the way, still go to the shows, if you have the chance, you go! Get hot, get sweaty, and lose your voice like Matt by going crazy. Hell, live your life to the fullest. This album makes me want to quit my job and do what I love. So I did. No longer do I work some shit ass job. I bought a camera, I have finished my script and now its time to shoot. Is it a risk, hell yes it it. But come on. (this is the part where I say “you only live once” but I’m falling for that)

Also I have thrown up Matt & Kim’s Funny or Die video for the video of the week, watch the video and you’ll understand why.

tl;dr: Buy the album, feel rejuvenated, go crazy, have fun, you’ll never be able to do what you want again.

The XX; Coexist

The XX is back and right back on cruise control. Some people like to see a band re-vamp themselves with each new album, but I on the other hand love a band that stays at their core and knows how to add a little class. When I first read a review for Coexist it was in the magazine, Under The Radar. Now I love Under The Radar, but whoever wrote that review got it wrong. They claim several things about the whole album being slow and just boring. I’m sorry, what do you expect.

The XX is known for being cool calm and collective. When I listen to The XX it is not to get pumped up or to get ready for a fight. They are perfect for hanging out, having a relaxing night. Here is my ideal listening conditions when listening to the newest album. Windows are down in the car, The XX is flowing with the wind that runs through the car. It’s 11 at night and no one is on the road. Give me that, give me that night. Give me the night where I have no worries except listening to The XX.

If you want to forget it all and get into yourself, pick it up. I know I didn’t really talk about the album, but what’s to say about an album that is perfect in its own right. It is a sound of its own, it is a band of its own.

Madeleine Peyroux; Bare Bones

Park the car in the drive, walk to the front door. Enter and throw your bad on the floor, take a moment to enjoy the fact that nothing matters anymore and you’re home. Make your way to living room, but not before pouring a glass of Merlot or perhaps a nice Sherry and put on Madeleine Peyroux’s Bare Bones.

This is my happy album and whenever I aim to relax or remove any stress from the day, all I need to do is listen to this album. Her voice is beautiful and the piano accompaniment is soft and glorious. A solid Jazz drum beat that knows just how to carry the tune oh so right. In her song “Instead” she tells us to, “Instead of feeling bad, be glad, you got somewhere to go. Instead of feeling sad, be happy you’re not alone.” She goes on and on, as a reminder of the good you have in your life. Don’t ever focus on the bad and remember the good.

When you listen to Madeleine Peyroux I promise you everything will be right in this world. I have been searching for a job for a few months now since I graduated in May and yes I get down from not hearing back. But instead of sitting back and not doing anything, I come here and write my reviews, I try new things, I write scripts, I’ve won an award for my scripts. We need to focus on the positive and Madeleine Peyroux helps me with that.

Each one of her songs is a masterful piece of beauty. My favorite is impossible to choose but I always seem to go back to “You Can’t Do Me”.

Passion Pit; Gossamer

The sophomore album. The challenge that faced Passion Pit for their second album was the fact that Manners was a hidden gem, turned out to be one of the best albums of 2009. Whenever a band is pressed to make an album in the shadow of success, you can almost always predict that it won’t live up to the expectations. For many bands, this album is a death sentence. However thats not the case.

Gossamer takes it head on and not only meets the hype but is the perfect compliment to tag along with Manners. Much like its predecessor Gossamer does exactly what it needs to do. The album brings the sounds and feel that we all have grown to love coming from Passion Pit and yet goes its own way to separate itself.

Right off the bat we are hit with three songs that are beautiful. The opening track to the album is “Take A Walk” , once you hit play you know you’re in for a great Passion Pit album. Starting with the slow building synthezser and keys that we love from then, then it goes into deep drum beat where we can start to rock back in forth to the song. Michael Angelakos starts to sing with that high voice that just continues to add to the complete puzzle that is Passion Pit.

I can only type so much, while I sit hear listening to this album, why don’t you go and give it a listen yourself. Below is the video for “Take A Walk” take a listen, become entranced and buy the album.

One last touch up, I will begin recording my reviews, once I get the page going please feel free to hop on over there and give a listen!

Metric; Synthetica

Metrics newest album since 2009 with the release of Fantasies. Which if you ask me is still my top album, not that I’m trying to take anything away from this album, its not you its me. The Metric sound that we have come to love all starts with the sirenesque voice of Emily Haynes. Honestly her voice on its own is incredible. It’s one of those defining sounds that comes from Metric.

Besides Haynes voice we have that repetitious drum beat that Metric lives by and that keeps Metric incredible. All their music is so easy to bob your head to and rock out. The single off of Synthetica is “Youth Without Youth” Which is a prime example of how Metric carries their music. Easy going yet upbeat with a distorted guitar and rocking vocals. It’s pretty much amazing

For me my favorite song besides “Youth Without Youth” is by far “Breathing Underwater” It’s just one of those songs thats good. Nothing really stands out for me, its just a really good song. “Is this my life, am I breathing underwater, Is this my life” I don’t know when but when Haynes sings it, its just a really easy song to sing along with and get lost in the music. I recommend it.

Below I’ll be posting Metrics official Lyric video for “Breathing Underwater” since you’ll be hearing “Youth Without Youth” on the radio more than once this summer.

Regina Spektor; What We Saw From The Cheap Seats

“I’m just a soul whose intentions are good, oh lord please don’t let me be misunderstood”  lyrics from The Animals or Regina Spektors new album? Well to be fair, both. It comes off the song, “Oh, Marcelo” in Regina Spektors newest album, “What We Saw From The Cheap Seats”. Unfortunately this album is not one of my favorites of hers, in fact its more or less on the lower end. I also had respect for Spektor on how she wasn’t afraid to take the road less travelled.

We go back to ‘Soviet Kitsch” and listen to “Poor Little Rich Boy” or “Begin to Hope” with “Edit”. This are the kinds of songs that are missing from the album. Thankfully I bought the extended album which gave me an additional three songs, two of which were in Russian and I am totally okay with that. Those songs seemed to have a bit of fun to them, she seemed more in her element.

This album was more about the emotion than it was anything else, the only up beat, Regina Spektor sound that we’ve come to know and love come from her single of the the album, “All The Rowboats”. When she sings, “… here’s your ticket, welcome to the tomb…” I fell in love with the song. The song focuses on how pieces of art in a museum are actually in a prison, the song has the emotion tagged along with the randomness that we love.

No official music video yet, so you’ll have to do a bit of searching to hear the track and I am just way to lazy to do it for you! Enjoy it when you find it.

Sarah Donner; the cat lady w/ a talent

The girl next door who has maybe one or two too many cats, yet she is still a blast to hang with. This is what I gather Sarah Donner is like from listening to her music. Do I have any idea who she is? Absolutely not yet just by listening she seems like a very fun person to hang with, whether you choose to listen to “The Center Pivot Irrigation Song” which is about those big things you see in corn fields while driving through the midwest. Haven’t seen them? Well your not missing much and yet she makes a jumpy tune thats easy to groove to.

If your cautious about how a song about watering crops can be successful, then just go to her website here where you can download a handful of her songs for free, you know which is a plus and all. I mean who doest like getting music for free.

Besides her music being really fun, she also has a great knack to get under your skin and into your emotions. Just give a listen to “All My Guns” which lucky for you is once again a free song to download. “…cause I would give up all my guns if you would give me all your love…” I cant explain why, but when she starts singing the chorus with the base drum banging and her guitar in rhythm it just seems to hit all the right notes. But please don’t take my word for it, go to her page download her music, then after your listen and realize how incredible it all is, purchase some of her tracks online.

Below I’m going to throw some youtube videos down below, just to give you a sense how awesome she is.
